With the support of the Ministry of Croatian Veterans, The City of Krapina decided to pay tribute to war veterans from the Krapina - Zagorje County by redesigning an existing park in the center of the town. The redesign was to represent a memorial for the war veterans from the aforementioned County, who were fatally injured and have died during the Croatian War of Independence. The proposed idea connects the existing identity of the observed space and surrounding historical heritage, with the newly created memorial.
The rectangular shape of the park, which is open from the West and is closed off from the other three sides, forms a frontal approach thus exemplifying the memorial at the center of the rectangular surface, accessed by a curved path. The memorial is a complex form composed of several elements that make up the composition. The vista is dominated by a radially-laid COR-TEN steel wall. With its coarse texture and color, this material is associated with blood, wounding and suffering of war veterans during the war years. Furthermore, the difference in wall edge height symbolizes the course of their struggle for the defense of the country - beginning, culmination and the end of warfare in Croatian War of Independence. A message to the fatally injured war veterans is written on the surface of the wall as a form of eternal gratitude.
The fractured rock that rises from the ground and bears a cross in its center, symbolizes Zagorje’s hilly landscape and reminds of the Zagorje’s persistence and faith, which perseveres in defending its country throughout the history and will continue to do so in the future. The monolith is laid out in detachment from the center, in order for a visitor to be able to experience the vista of the old town and the centuries-old Fort of the Krapina City through the central, vertical cross axis, connecting the historical heritage theme with the newly created memorial.
