The organizers and investors of the competition for the preliminary urban-architectural design of the Bundek-Istok theme park (Racinjak Park) were the City of Zagreb and Association of Architects Zagreb (AAZ). Green Infrastructure Ltd. won third place in this competition.

The area of the planned Racinjak Park, seen in the context of the City of Zagreb, represents a very valuable park area important for all its inhabitants. Since the Sava River is extremely important for the urban green infrastructure of the City of Zagreb, because it represents its backbone which other parts of the system are attached to, this river-bound area also represents a very important part of the urban landscape considered in the urban context. The idea of a river flowing through the city was the basic inspiration for the development of the concept, where its fluidity, as a basic design characteristic, was transferred to the park area. In further elaboration, the river pebbles determine the forms in some parts of the park, within which all user functions and contents are located as well. The pebble shape served as a form that closes off zones of certain functions, while the river’s wavy lines became communication corridors.

At the same time, Zapruđe, as a neighborhood determined by straight-line, geometric urban morphology, generated the straight forms that deepen and superpose with the aforementioned river forms, extending themselves into the linear axes. This way, the new park represents both the symbol of the context of the space in which it is created, which is the natural riverine landscape, as well as a straight, geometrical, functionalist neighborhood that develops in its vicinity. Therefore, these lines merge, i.e. superpose as the layers that create the park. The aforementioned layers are also associative in character, as they represent the basic building elements of urban morphology - built versus natural, or in this case geometric versus the organic.

The function is determined in a relation to the existing Bundek Park because the planned park is developed as its extension. Therefore, the characteristics of the Bundek Park greatly determined the function of the Racinjak Park.
